This rescue clearly puts animal welfare as their top priority and aim to perfectly match the rescue to their potential home. From making my application through to receiving my gorgeous boy, I have been impressed by the professionalism and care shown by the rescue. Jemima and Cheryl offer expert advice, the foster was clearly experienced and caring, and all just had the puppies welfare at heart. I am just so impressed by the whole experience and have my gorgeous boy at home now with the reassurance that I can seek ongoing advice from the rescue centre as and when needed. I can't recommend them highly enough to anyone serious about adopting a rescue.

We had a very good experience with BRX. Application process was easy but thorough, with clear communication. I was pleased they had modern and knowledgable views on training, spaying/neutering and diet, and advised us accordingly. The puppy we adopted was well cared for in foster, clean, healthy and well socialised. The information BRX supplied was detailed and accurate. I would recommend this rescue to anyone, and not hesitate to adopt through them in the future.

Following registering with various rescues, Black Retriever X were the only ones who came back to me promptly with positive responses and everything that went on after that was amazing! Following adoption of our beautiful black lab, the rescue were 100% supportive with all aspects of her health, behaviour and training. Cannot fault them! Jemima and the team give the rescue so much of their time, Jemima even postponed her holiday to help us. I wouldn’t hesitate to go to them again and I hope I can help them in the future and give something back to repay them for all they’ve done for us.

Very impressed with the friendly and professional way my adoption was dealt with. The interests if the dog were their main criteria which is vital for a successful match. I was offered support for the rest of the dogs life and I did have a small problem at the start (not unusual for rescue dogs to have issues) for which I was given all the advice and assistance required to resolve this. Happy to say this worked very quickly but it was made very clear to me that help was there for as long as I needed it. BRX are a very small rescue but are very professional in their approach.
When adopting rescues my main concern is what happens if it doesn't work out but BRX were very quick to reassure my that I would always have their support which meant I knew I would not be on my own once the dog had arrived.
I would not hesitate to recommend BRX to anyone considering rehoming a rescue dog and in the future they will be my first port of call if I am ever considering an additional dog.

Very friendly, independent rescue who go out of their way to save beautiful dogs. No kennels are used so the dogs are fostered, worked with if any issues, then adopted. Lifetime backup if required. We love our Labrador - she is the reason I get up in the morning - literally! 😂
Very easy hand over - we could negotiate where we picked our dog up from.
Lots of messages, what’s-apps and contact from Jem. We felt reassured this was the right dog for us, but if it hadn’t worked out we knew there was help on hand from Jem and her team.Review by: Kanny

Amazing charity. Communication was superb. All arrangements were discussed and continued support after collection. It is a robust interview process, but this gave us even more confidence in this organisation. It is such a huge thing to adopt any animal and there are never 100% guarantees. However, every piece of information that could be shared was. We have kept in contact since we brought our fur baby home and though these have been simple updates from us, we always receive lovely communication back. I have no doubt, if we needed further support, it would absolutely be given. Couldn’t be happier with the whole process, and especially our gorgeous new addition to the family.

If only all rescues were this professional and responsible! They go to great lengths to ensure that dog and adoptive home are suitable for each other. We had several meetings with the foster carer and the dog we enquired about. I didn’t feel rushed into anything and I really felt that having the correct fit between dog and adopter is more important to the rescue than ticking boxes about how many they rehome. I am also very impressed with the level of ongoing support offered. This is a rescue that is staffed by people who know about dogs and that have a science based approach - if all rescues were like this the world would be a much better place for animals.

We have now adopted two dogs from Black Retriever X Rescue. Both times we have been really happy with the information provided to us before, during and after the adoption process. Black retriever X Rescue assessed both dogs thoroughly to enable them to provide clear and specific information about their characters and their needs and spoke to us at length about the dogs to ensure they were a good fit for our home and lifestyle. With our most recent dog, we were pleased to be offered the flexibility to foster before adoption to ensure that he would get along with our other dogs and we were well supported through this process with no pressure to rush our decision. We would highly recommend Black Retriever X Rescue.

This review has long been overdue! I’ve recommended this rescue to so many people as they are approachable, experienced and down to earth and have the dog’s interests fully at heart. One of the main aspects that sets this rescue worlds apart from many others is the fact that they asses each home on a case by case and not just a box ticking exercise as with many well known ones where many of those dogs are then left stuck in kennels. This rescue and the brilliant team behind it have positively changed so many dog’s lives and their new families including mine! As I’m writing this, I have my Collie X Spaniel who I adopted to add to the family and also be a companion for my Lab and they are happily curled up together next to me. When in a position to do so, I would happily adopt from BRX again. Thank you to BRX for all that you do for the dogs and their humans :-)

My mum first adopted from BRX in 2006 and had had 2 rescues from them. I took in my first BRX rescue in 2014 and still get annual contact from BRX asking how he is getting on. They really care about their dogs and about finding the right home. We had follow-up support with training and behavioural issues and on a pre-existing health condition, all paid for by BRX. I recommend them to anyone I know who is interested in rehoming a dog.

I adopted Barney at the end of July. The rescue’s description of him was spot on - just a lovely soul. They did also mention his limited hearing and his possible arthritis (later confirmed). He arrived understandably stressed after initially being dumped, having a week or so in excellent foster care, and then having to travel overnight in high temperatures. I had several phone calls and emails from both Jemima, and Mary, who had taken him in. They reassured and advised me about his diarrhoea and medication for his lameness. I felt supported at all times, and as though they really did care about every dog they undertook to help. 4 months on we love Barney to bits and can’t imagine life without him. I would certainly recommend Black Retriever X Rescue as an ethical, responsible rescue who do thorough home checks, and their very best to find permanent, loving homes for all the dogs in their care.

This is a very thorough rescue. They take a lot of care over the assessment process and place the dog with the home they think will best suit the animal. The dogs are fostered and assessed carefully before being put up for adoption. I was able to speak in person to my dog’s foster mother and got a detailed assessment.
We did have some teething problems when we first brought her home but the rescue offer 24 hour support and the services of a dog behaviourist.

We have now rescued 6 dogs with BRX... in our case these have tended to be older ones or those passed over because of behavioural or medical problems... or simply because they are black and not quite so pretty as puppies bought from (over)breeders. These have all been very accurately assessed and have all proved to be wonderful family members. We had one issue with an introduction into our pack of a very reactive hound, and we received excellent advice and a visit to help the actual first meeting - within minutes they were all pack mates and sleeping next to eachother on the sofa that night. Assessments will be done of where you live and lifestyles and you may not get the dog you think is perfect for you (we know that feeling too) but do apply as the ones we have received have all just slotted in perfectly

We have received the best experience possible from Black Retriever X Rescue. They made very sure that we were the right home for the dog and that the dog was suitable for our lifestyle. Our little girl was brought in from N Ireland and I have heard horror stories about that journey. When she arrived, she had obviously been beautifully cared for before and during her journey and she was clean, happy and comfortable. I would recommend this rescue again and again for the care of the dogs and the people that they are rehomed to.

I just thought I would give the perspective of a previous adopter.
I adopted Kes a collie/setter cross 6 years ago as a 4 month old pup on recommendation from my daughter who had adopted from Black retreiver x rescue. His mother had been rescued and Kes was born in a foster home. He was a very well adjusted pup microchipped and vaccinated. The adoption process was rigorous and it was clear from the start that this is a very professional organisation that puts the dog first. However I felt that the support for adopters was second to none in a practical and no nonsense manner. Kes has ruled my life for the passes 6 years and I wouldn't have it any other way.

We have now rescued 2 dogs through BRX and are so happy we did. The people are honest and genuine in their desire to do the best they can for the dogs that come into their remit / care and this should be celebrated. The dogs are great, big and get more wonderful everyday but then we are lucky enough to have the space to share with them. The process is controlled yet flexible to suit the circumstances by putting the future happiness of the dogs first. We got Kiera (our second rescue) on the completion of a successful blind date with Sampson (our first rescue). They are the best of friends now even if Kiera is growing in confidence and starting to encroach on some of his domains like his man-cave.... I would hope that you would help a dog or just the organisation achieve their goals as their hearts are in the right place!

BRX are quite clearly very experienced in dog behaviours/needs, and strive to learn as much as possible about each dog, to ensure they go to the right home. Both the workers at the rescue and the foster carer holding our dog had a great interest in making sure the dog had exactly the right home for her. I was well informed throughout the whole adoption process, with regular updates along the way. The support from the foster carer especially was amazing - after having a long discussion with her to find out everything about the dog, she was then available to contact via text to answer my many questions I had along the way. I was also sent regular pictures and videos while I waited for the dog to be transported over to England. Overall, I really felt as though everyone involved in the rescue centre truly cared about every dog in their care, and ultimately wanted the best for every one. The application process is very thorough, which is very reassuring. A great rescue, in all.

My experience with the Blackretrieverx rescue has been exceptional. I followed Rio a Black RetrieverX for the best part of 8 weeks on the Blackretrieverx Facebook and due to a number of situations or possibly fate we picked this special boy up from his foster home on Sunday the 4th of December. Gemima and Cheryl were our main contacts through this journey and at all times we were informed of any issues with Rio and a detailed history of exactly what had happened to him, nothing was hidden. After picking Rio up on the 4th we were in a situation where we were prepared for most situations, and if there was anything we were unsure of we contacted either Gemima or Cheryl and received expert advice. Thanks to the Blackretrieverx rescue we really feel lucky that we have this wonderful boy Rio with all of the help and support of an organisation that really cares and puts a lot of time and effort not only rehoming dogs but choosing the right people and support to make it a forever home.

There are so many good things to say about this rescue that we hardly know where to start! We adopted an anxious dog with a relatively minor but lifelong medical condition. Black Retriever X Rescue (BRX) went to great lengths to ensure that we were the best people to help him with his emotional and physical issues, so that he never again finds himself homeless. They have also been really supportive of us too - taking things slowly and carefully and lots of emails/phone calls with helpful information both before and after the adoption. He was fostered by a member of the BRX team, who went the extra thousand miles to ensure a smooth transition from her home to our home. We follow this rescue on Facebook and we're regularly reduced to tears by the lengths they go to to save the lives of lovely dogs. So many happy endings. Keep up the AMAZING work BRX - it's so necessary and so appreciated.

Black retriever X rescue do an amazing job of understanding the individual dog's temperament and character whilst they are with their foster carers. As the doggies are in a domestic home the foster parents get to see how they behave in a home not a kennel type centre. They then 'advertise' the dogs on their Facebook page with photographs so that prospective adopters know the type of dog they might rehome. If you contact expressing your interest you have to complete a detailed form about you, your pets and your lifestyle. If they think you match the dog, then a home check and dog meeting are arranged. It is all very personal and there is a lot of support. My new dog is just super and suits us so well. 10 out of 10! :-)

The dog we adopted came from Spain and was thoroughly assessed prior to being brought over. He was in good health and as described. The rescue kept him in foster until we were able to collect him. Initially one of our other dogs was not very keen and a couple of arguments ensued. We were given help, support and advice to help us through this and were not made to feel obligated to keep him if the problems continued, it was in their interest to make sure we had the right dog. Paperwork and donation was not sent until the dog had settled. I would recommend them to anyone as we have a delightful little chap from them.

I was very impressed with the handling and care of the dog, and the thoroughness of the application process. BRX Rescue is an extremely well organised charity. The minimal donation for the dog, as I understand, covers it's basic vet fees and vaccinations and microchipping. The donation is not taken until the dog is settled at the new home. The rescue will rehome the dog should the pairing turn out not to be suitable. This is unlikely as the pairing is made after thorough questioning and a home visit. I would recommend BRX Rescue to anyone looking to re-home a working dog breed.

Where possible all animals for rehoming are first fostered to assess their nature, in my case, Sasha was actually kept at the rescue because she had just been spayed and had developed kennel cough. The society kept me fully briefed about Sasha, and to ensure that I was a competent owner, they contacted my agility instructor for a reference which I thought was an excellent way of showing how much they care about the rehoming process

The BLack Retriever rescue is brilliant and appears well run. Jemima has the best interests of al her dogs at heart and takes great care to match dog to new owner. I did not visit the rescue but your website did not allow me to record this. Out beautiful Bernese/border collie Tommy is only 8 months old and was in a foster home for about 4 weeks until we adopted him. Prior to this we believe he was a stray puppy until he was rescued and Liz his foster mum had looked after him superbly and had house trained him, taught him recall and to be good with other dogs.
Even our Vet was impressed by the care Jemima had taken with Tommy . The support we have received has been great and we know that they are only a telephone call away should we need advice etc.
We are so lucky as Tommy is a brilliant dog and has settled in with our family and our other dog Honey and it is all thanks to Jemima and her team

We responded to an urgent Foster request from the Rescue but this did not remove any of the checks that would normally apply to an normal adoption. We were home checked and had already filled out an application form for adoption on a previous dog. This form needed to be updated so checks on suitability were in place. We were helped all the way through the fostering process, with phone calls and email if needed.
We decided to adopt in the end and we still have 24/7 support if we need it.
The owner is very thorough with the checks and they want the best for the dogs who are adopted. Adoption can take time and you might not succeed with your first choice but rest assured you will get the right dog for you in the end.Review by: Julie_T

Thanks to the black retriever x rescue we have a wonderful addition to our family. They were very very thorough with checks and matching the perfect dog to our family. They have supported us in the settling in phase and have offered amazing advice at every corner. They have not only supported us with the dog we took from them but also given some amazing support and advice regarding some other issues with our older dog too. This is a wonderful and inspirational rescue with a great team who clearly care deeply about the lives of all the dogs in their care. We are very grateful for all they have done for us and will treasure the gift of our dog always. Thank you for all you do black retriever x rescue.

this rescue centre really has the interests and welfare of the animal at heart. Extreme care is taken to ensure that the dog is going to a "forever" home. They try and foster the dogs first so that they can carry out a full assessment. Everything they assessed about the dog I adopted was very true, and I couldn't be happier.

We found this rescue to be very responsible in the care and well being of the dogs. Jemima Harrison does all the work herself and has saved so many furbies. I really couldn't recommend this rescue enough. All of the dogs they rescue would have a terrible fate if left, so please consider this rescue when looking for a furbie.....

BRX made a complete assessment of the dog we wanted to adopt by placing him in foster care for 6 weeks before we met him. She also conducted a thorough assessment of us, our home, and most importantly, our other dog before suggesting we all met. She then consulted with the foster parent about our interactions before agreeing on the adoption. Plenty of written support and recommended toys/food/equipment suggested, and follow up phone calls to ensure everything was working out. We had a few 'wobbles' but Jemima was always available to help, as were the army of Facebook supporters aligned within the BRX community. I really value BRXs honest appraisal of both dogs and potential owners, she will suggest alternatives and truly has the welfare of the dogs at heart, as well as considering the long term future relationship of the dog(s) in the household.
The website is not really used anymore for adopters, the Facebook page is really helpful for info and advice.
Highly recommended...and I will be using BRX again to add to our doggy family.Review by: Sarah

I searched high and low for a good rescue I felt I could trust and after watching the website and doing some research I found this rescue, back in 2008. After plenty of waiting I found a dog who I felt I could give a good home to. When I visited I felt very welcome, but also that I was being assessed. I was asked many questions and knew I was being watched with the dog in question. This is exactly what I wanted and what other rescues didn't appear to do! It gave me confidence that she cared about where the dog was going and whether I was the right person. I was able to spend most of the day with the dog and was given all the information, good and bad about her. The after-care has been fantastic and I honestly believe she is one of the best rescues out there. You may have to wait for the right dog, but surely that is better than being allowed to take home the first one that catches your eye- it is so important to match dogs and people and this is exactly what this rescue does.
I was so impressed with the process and the amazing work and dedication I have now fostered several times foe this rescue. High expectations and a high standard of information and care given.Review by: Incadog

Black Retriever X Rescue is a small, privately run rescue. The owner, together with a dedicated group of foster carers, deserve the highest accolade. They are caring, compassionate and, most importantly, the dogs' needs come first. Most of the dogs come from Ireland where there is a real problem, and Black Retriever X Rescue helps dogs irrespective of age. Expect an in-depth questionnaire and a stringent vetting process--just as it should be. We have had our wonderful dog for over a year now, and we know that should we have any concerns or problems, then we can contact Black Retriever X Rescue at any time; and help will be forthcoming. It truly is an amazing rescue.

I have since adopted a 2nd dog from this rescue and although they are based a long distance from me, the support I received when going through a recent serious illness was exceptional.
I would recommend this rescue as their knowledge and help is very good.
The foster homes they use primarily are very clued up as well.Review by: Corinne Hamp

Black Retriever X is a fantastic rescue. The home check and assessment process is rigorous and throrough but not over intrusive. They are flexible in their requirements for homes to suit the dogs and I have the most wonderful dog as a result. I would recommend them to anyone looking to adopt a rescue dog

We adopted Jack ( 1yr old collie x ) in October and we're so glad we did. We contacted the rescue through Facebook and were lucky to be selected, based on our suitability for him, to meet him at his foster carers home. This gave us and our other dog, several hours with him to see how we all got on in a real environment. The dogs loved each other and it was a done deal. As Jack had been in foster for several months, we were given accurate information about his temperament and his needs. A couple of weeks later, after a home check, we were able to collect him. The rescue phoned and emailed several times to offer help with settling him and we know we can contact them any time if a problem arises. Would highly recommend Black Retriever x Rescue.

An excellent, professionally run, small rescue. Dogs are placed in appropriate foster homes for assessment before adoption. The rescue quite rightly ensures that each dog goes to the right home for its particular needs and is wholly supportive post adoption. I highly recommend this rescue, Jemima works tirelessly for the animals with a real passion and integrity.

I cannot praise BRX enough for the hard work they put into making sure that the dogs find just the right forever home & that you get a dog that is right for you. They have the very best interests of the dogs at the heart of everything they do. Their on going help & support is fantastic. I would definitely adopt a dog from Jemima again. I feel that I am part of the BRX family & can ask for help/advice whenever I need to.

A small rescue with the most dedicated and knowledgeable service. They know all about dogs and they know the dogs they have. Every step is taken to match dog to person and they are not afraid to reject a person if they are unsure. A wonderful balance of competence, care and focus.
No doubt that any other dog i have will be from here and that all my friends are recommended here.Review by: CharlyDancer

BRX does a wonderful job, placing the dogs they rescue in foster gives a great opportunity for the rescue to learn what the dogs are like in a home environment. Rehoming my dog Ben through them was a quick, easy adoption and Jemima (the founder of BRX) has always been on hand for post adoption care. She carefully selects which dog suits which applicant with the view to providing these rescue dogs with a forever home.

Great after sales help, a brilliant adoption service. We have fostered from this rescue as well and had a lot of support when we needed it.The rescue may seem very picky about who they place their dogs with but they get it right!!Go on - rescue a dog, they will love you forever!

wholly professional, they care about each dog as an individual, assess his/her needs, and home appropriately, however long that takes. As a dog-owner of many years, I was greatly impressed at the time they took to get to know me, my ability to home another dog, before they committed. They do a fabulous job rescuing dogs from Ireland who would otherwise risk the possibility/certainty of being PTS, regardless that they are healthy and would make wonderful companions. The dog I have rescued from them does 'everything it said on the tin' - boisterous, loving, sociable, intelligent…. doesn't bear thinking about what would have happened to him if BRX hadn't found him. I have nothing but praise.

A fantastic, dedicated privately run rescue. The rescue owner and foster homes are incredibly hard working and caring. The vetting process may seem in depth and the questionnaire is detailed but this enables an excellent matching process.
There is lifelong back up support and when I was struggling with lead training the help was there !!
I cant fault BRX and if/when i am looking for another dog this is the rescue I will now go to. Adoption: Feb 2013 -

Black Retriever Cross Rescue is a privately run rescue service and centre. The person who runs it could not be better - passionate, expert, experienced, knowledgeable, dedicated and extremely hard working!
Many of the dogs rehomed are from Ireland where there is a real problem however BRCR and helpers really go for it and the large network of foster homes and rigid vetting process always considers the dogs interests and well being above anything else. If you are looking for a "quick" and easy solution to finding the ideal dog then BRX will not be for you - you will need to persist and offer alot - for example most of the dogs do need someone at home most of the time and many need experience to settle them in. I can not recommend BRCR and her team highly enough. Adoption: Nov 2012 -

Black Retriever X is a very small rescue and my dog came over from Dundalk Dog Rescue direct to me. The information and advice received from the rescue during and after the process was great and exactly what I needed to settle a nervous little dog who is now happy and secure and a lovely companion. Wonderful organization. BRX arrange that dogs are fostered before adoption. On website, foster family describe behaviour and any problems with other animals or people. Pound and foster home photographs are shown. Can see the dog in normal situation [ not kennels]. We even took our new dog to our own home and vet before making decision. Shots and neutering [where suitable] all done. Reasonable cost Good assessment of our place by fosterer. Really great communication with fosterers and BRX. We look forward to fostering soon. This organisation is extremely professional with a highly experienced committed and conscientious Principal. Potential owners are thoroughly vetted and home checks are also carried out .The commitment to the dogs is on the basis of their entire lifetime and backup help and advice is offered 24/7. I can personally testify to this as I have had personal experience of the follow up service. As regards the dogs themselves what you get is exactly as described and it is clear that great care is taken in matching dogs to owners.
This is a high calibre organisation with standards which must exceed many.

This is a dedicated rescue. Have now adopted two dogs and have received excellent support and advice. This is a high callibre operation where every possible effort is made to match the dogs with their new owners. Assistance in practical terms, together with advice willingly given 24/7, ensures any problems which may arise are expertly solved. The dogs are assessed, photographed and described truthfully. BRX is delighted to hear how their dogs progress throughout their lives. They really do care. I cannot speak highly enough about this rescue and would encourage anyone wishing to offer a rescued dog a home to contact them. Adoption: 2008
